Matt Wallace leads by four in tough Crans Montana conditions

September 07, 2024

Matt Wallace extended his lead at the Omega European Masters, holding a four-shot advantage despite battling challenging conditions in the Swiss Alps.

Starting the third round at 14 under par, Wallace had been flawless through 36 holes, but windy conditions quickly tested his streak. He recorded his first bogey on the second hole and finished the day with a three-over-par 73, a round that included six bogeys and three birdies. Wallace sits at 11 under par heading into the final round.

Alfredo Garcia-Heredia moved into second place with a one-under 71, putting him at seven under par. His round featured four birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey.

Reflecting on the tough conditions, Wallace said, "It was brutal out there. I felt I struck the ball well, but the wind made it really difficult. Today wasn’t about going low—it was about holding onto my lead, and I’m pleased I managed that."

At one point, Wallace’s lead was cut to a single shot by the eighth hole, but a clutch 24-foot birdie putt restored his cushion. Although he dropped more shots, his closest rivals failed to take full advantage. Wallace heads into the final round with a comfortable four-shot lead.

Garcia-Heredia remains his closest competitor, while Jordan Smith, Andrew Johnston, and Henrik Norlander are among those chasing him at six under par. Alex Fitzpatrick and others are close behind as the tournament reaches its climax.
